Does drinking increase the odds of divorce?

On Behalf of | Apr 7, 2022 | Family Law

Do you feel like your spouse has started drinking more, and are you wondering if that’s going to bring about a divorce? Some studies determined that, over the last two years, mothers who have kids that are 4 years old and younger increased the total amount of alcohol they consumed by at least 300%.

This certainly suggests that drinking habits have changed, at least to some degree, and some people may be drinking more than they were previously. Likewise, you may want to note that studies have historically found a link between alcohol consumption and a higher risk of divorce. In some cases, the odds of divorce can increase by 20% when one person consumes alcohol consistently.

This certainly does not mean that you will get divorced just because you or your spouse drinks more often, but it shows that you are wise to begin thinking about it. If you can identify signs of divorce in advance, it often helps you set yourself up for success during the actual divorce process.

What steps should you take?

There are a lot of things that you can do to prepare for an upcoming divorce. You may need to gather financial documents, for instance, or consider your own goals. If you have children, your goal may be to maximize the time you get to spend with them. If you’re a business owner, you likely want to protect your interest in your company.

No matter where you stand, if you do find that you and your spouse are going to get a divorce, make sure you take the time to carefully consider all of your legal options.
